Everyone knows that Dubai is becoming one of the premier luxury destinations in the world, and now they can flex their muscles some more. Atlantis The Palm, the first resort to open on Dubai’s revolutionary man-made island The Palm Jumeirah. The resort consists of two towers linked by a bridge, with a total of approximately two thousand rooms. There are two Palm Jumeirah Monorail stations connecting the resort to the main section of the Palm Jumeirah islands. Highlights include Aquaventure, the biggest water park in the Middle East, an open-aired marine habitat, a seemingly endless stretch of beach, luxury boutiques, a spa and fitness club, 17 dining choices including four celebrity chef restaurants, and an exciting nightclub.

Another Bahamas project has been announced and this one has a sustainable angle. Star Island is a 35-acre island in a protected sound ten minutes by boat from harbor island. The resort will be home to private homes and resort residences with facilities that will include a spa, restaurants, bars, pools, tennis courts and a “no-fuel” marina. Hot on the heels of the resort’s luxury credentials comes its focus on sustainability. Architect David Sklar says the project is an experimental ground for the latest eco-technologies and materials, hoping to set an example for the resort industry.

Inside the resort, LED lighting and geothermal HVAC has been employed. Water is provided by the rainwater harvesting system that takes advantage of every surface from roofs to roads, up to 100,000 gallons a day of which is then purified and stored underground. Smaller details have also been considered, meaning guests can enjoy shade-grown organic coffee in the restaurant, relax on fair-trade furniture in the lobby and rest their bones on rapidly renewable-bamboo sheets.
