As an auto enthusiast, Jay Leno had always wanted to design his own turbine-engined car, and when he conceived the notion for a high-performance, yet environmentally friendly, vehicle the pen and napkin came out.  The EcoJet was initially a static exhibit, but one thing about Jay’s Garage is that everything runs. So Jim Hall, Bernard Juchli and the other wizards in the Burbank shop set about to turn the EcoJet from a barely rolling display into a complete running automobile.

Inspired by a Luigi Chinetti-owned 330 LM used in an obscure Fellini film, the Ferrari has unveiled a second made-to-order car, P540 Superfast Aperta is a 599 GTB Fiorano-based one-off Pinfinarina designed for the son of the creator of cable TV. The Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta is based on the chassis of a 599 GTB Fiorano and took 14 months to complete. The P540 is completely road legal and is powered by a 612 hp 6.0-liter V12 engine. Extensive use of carbon fiber allowed the Special Projects engineers to keep weight gain down to only 44 pounds in spite of having to strengthen the open top car.

Wheelsandmore is a tuning company based in Baesweiler, Germany who specialize in performance and styling modifications for a variety of supercars including Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s Bentley’s and more. For 2009 the firm has added to their line of Aston Martin performance parts with a cosmetic and engineering package for the DB9 Convertible. First up is a performance upgrade for the 6.0 liter V12 engine with 476 hp and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque that comes with the production version. Wheelsandmore boosts that by 60 hp while adding 68 Nm (50 lb-ft) of torque too. They’ve done so by tinkering with the ECU and adding a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with 200-cell sport catalysts and noise-volume valve control. The DB9 also gets a new body kit made of polyurethane along with side skirts, front and rear aprons and a rear lid spoiler. The convertible gets fitted with Kahn RS-V 20-inch wheels with Dunlop Sport Maxx performance tires – 255/35/20 for the front 9.0×20 rims and 285/30/20 for the 11.0×20 rear rims.

Always very good, the new Accord has graduated to great.

4) FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO ($320,000). It is the finest automobile on the road — too bad they are already sold out and so expensive few of us will ever drive one. The 599 is indeed costly, but it has features found only on million-dollar cars — like its Enzo-sourced 612-horsepower V-12 engine. Despite its 3.7-second 0-60 capability and 205 m.p.h. top speed, this is a car that is also tuned so that it can be a docile everyday driver. The sophistication and beauty of this latest Ferrari elevates it from a sublime piece of machinery to fine art.

5) 2008 PORSCHE 911 GT3 (base price $108,360). I’ve never fully warmed to the turbocharged, all-wheel-drive 911s, and the GT3 reminded me why. This rear-drive, naturally aspirated, 415-horse Porsche is not only the quintessential 911, it’s the quintessential sports car, a street-legal racecar with no hyperbole attached.

9) 2008 CHEVROLET MALIBU ($21,470). Sure, G.M. kept promising that this all-new sedan would be a winner, but didn’t it say the same thing about the 20 or 30 midsize sedans that preceded it? This time, Chevy really does seem to have gotten the Malibu right, as a mainstream car that is refined, quiet and handsome. It may be the most satisfying midmarket midsize sedan from G.M. since the 1970s, and for about $20,000 the 4-cylinder version is a screaming deal.

10) PORSCHE CAYENNE ($43,400-$93,700) This polarizing Porsche is the best S.U.V. you can buy. If you can get over the fact that the venerable German sports car maker has stooped to making S.U.V.’s, the Cayenne has a lot going for it: high-quality materials, unparalleled driving dynamics and a hip factor missing in other S.U.V.’s. And where else can you find a Porsche V-8?
